Safe and Sound Protocol

What if feeling more regulated could begin with simply listening?

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a gentle, nervous-system-based listening program developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, a neuroscientist and trauma researcher. The program uses specially filtered music to support the nervous system and create opportunities for greater calm, connection, and resilience.

Rather than asking you to talk about or process everything you’ve experienced, SSP offers another way to support your nervous system through listening.

Who might benefit from SSP?

SSP may be a helpful support for you or your child if you experience:

  • Trauma or PTSD
  • Anxiety or persistent feelings of overwhelm
  • Depression or low mood
  • Difficulty with attention, focus, or feeling present
  • Feeling emotionally or physically “stuck,” shut down, or disconnected
  • Big emotional reactions or difficulty settling after stress
  • Difficulty feeling safe or connected in relationships
  • Chronic pain or ongoing physical tension
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Sensory sensitivities or sensory processing differences

You don’t have to identify with a diagnosis to benefit from nervous-system support. You may simply notice that you have a hard time slowing down, settling, connecting, or feeling comfortable in your body.

How we can use SSP together

SSP can be incorporated into our therapy work as another way of supporting your nervous system, or we can work together virtually to create a listening program that fits your individual needs.

I’ve found SSP can be a gentle way to begin developing a mindful listening practice at home while becoming more aware of what your nervous system is communicating.

As you listen, we can pay attention to changes in your body, emotions, energy, and sense of connection. From there, we can build practical skills that help you recognize what you need and support yourself when life feels overwhelming, disconnected, or difficult to navigate.

The goal isn’t to force yourself to relax. It’s to create opportunities for your nervous system to experience more safety, flexibility, and connection at a pace that feels right for you.

Befriending Your Nervous System: Finding Safety, Choice, and Calm

Viktor Frankl talked about how the greatest freedom we have is the freedom to choose our response in any given situation. This  freedom isn’t always easy to access — especially when we feel anxious, overwhelmed, or disconnected — but it’s something  we can strengthen through mindfulness, self-compassion, and nervous system awareness.  Learning to Ride Life’s...

“When I found Danelle, I was looking for someone who understood and appreciated this connection between our minds and bodies. And because the vulnerability was not something I was comfortable with, who would be open to using body movement to talk about deeper topics. We would talk first, then get into gentle movement, then when I was in a relaxed position, she would lead me through a mediation. I truly feel like I’m experiencing a deeper connection and a growing love for myself because I took this journey with my whole self.”
